Nearly 4 million people, about 20% of Australia’s population live within the greater Sydney region. Being on the harbour, the water is the city’s focus with many of Sydney’s major attractions waterside.
Sydney has a great public transport with major rail and bus networks plus ferry services which cover the whole of Sydney Harbour, plus one of the few city monorails operating in the world.
Sydney is a popular tourist destination for travelers from around the world, possibly due to its spectacular waterfront which would also make it one of the most recognisable cities in the world.
Tourism is a big part of Sydney’s lifestyle and tourist and locals alike are well catered for from the entertainment area of Darling Harbour to the old world charm of The Rocks.
Well known for its spectacular harbour a popular activity would be to catch a ferry to manly or a bus to Bondi to enjoy a swim at the beach in the often warm and pleasant climate.
Kings Cross is popular with backpackers as many cheap hostels can be found around this area, there are plenty of pubs in Kings Cross but many are of the Men’s Club variety and feature adult entertainment.
In recent years Sydney has become one of the premier ‘gay capitals’ of the world due to the large Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras that is celebrated at the end of February every year in Oxford Street. The Mardi Gras attracts people from all over Australia and the world and is also televised across the nation.
