Darlinghurst Road is the centre of King’s Cross’ activity- there is constant activity. Being the heart of Sydney’s red light district there is no shortage of visitors and onlookers. Over the past decade the area has been cleaned up considerably and its bohemian and eccentric mix of people all co exist quiet well. Visitors are warned to be wary but in no way scared of the region. There is a large police presence and the main strip is relatively safe.
Apart from the huge Coca Cola sign the most famous structure is the EL Alamein fountain which is located at the entrance of the Fitzroy Gardens about half way down Darlinghurst Road. This was erected as a war memorial to the men who fought the battle of El Alamein in Northern Africa during World War II. After the Sydney Harbor Bridge and the Opera House it is probably Sydney’s popular photo snap.
Built in 1961, the fountain so popular it has been copied in many cities around the world and is the ‘Meeting Place’ on the Cross. Many travelers and visitors meet their friends at the fountain.

With the Woolloomooloo naval base only a short walk Kings Cross was in its hay day during the Second World War when thousands of American and Australian Soldiers partied in the area. This short period has left its legacy over the last fifty years with the introduction of American Style bars, clubs, pizza shops and of course strip clubs.
Much of the Cross’ architecture is beautifully restored to its Victorian Past and the area is home to much of the city’s Bohemian Tribe, with many of Australia’s more famous artists, painters, poets, actors and writers all calling the area home.
Kings Cross is easily accessible from all of Sydney there is a Train Station right in the centre of Darlinghurst Road and there are plenty of bus services from all over the city stopping by.
