Melbourne is Australia’s second largest city after Sydney and capital of Victoria. Known for it’s love of sporting events, it is Australia’s most European style city.

Melbourne has some of the finest architecture in the country, from historic old sandstone buildings to the tallest office towers found in the country.

Once dubbed “Marvelous Melbourne” by the British press around the time of the Victorian gold rush it was also the second largest city in the British Empire at the time.

With a huge Greek, Asian and European population Melbourne has the most diverse mix of cultures found anywhere in Australia.

Melbourne has one of the world’s best tram networks. These trams are heavily relied on in the city and way out in the suburbs. Bus and train services complement them.

An Olympic city in 1956 Melbourne is world renowned for its love of sport. Melbournians are sporting mad! Major sporting events during the year include the world famous Melbourne Cup, The AFL grand final, The Formula One Grand Prix and Australian Open Tennis Grand Slam.

Melbourne was home to the 2006 Commonwealth Games which was the biggest sporting event in the world prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Melbourne is rich in culture and entertainment, with magnificent museums, theatres and concert halls. It has one of the worlds largest Casino complexes and huge sporting arenas.

Built on the Yarra river but moving towards the bayside with the monstrous scale Docklands precinct underway Melbourne is one of the Great cities of the World.
